In July 2018 I had the pleasure of visiting M.E.T.I. Cottage for a day. Located on Pulau Meti outside the island of Halmahera in North Maluku, this simple little lodging is a gem.

Business partners Adi and Maxi have built it using mostly recycled and locally sourced materials, yet it is highly functional and beautiful. Their focus is on being environmentally sustainable and to give back to the local community.

The sleeping quarters are semi-open platforms right on the water’s edge, allowing the sea breeze to flow through. Mosquito nets and beddings are provided, and so is electricity from a generator for an hour a day so that you can charge your devices. Kerosene lamps light up the area after dark.

The nicely decorated main building has a kitchen and dining area where meals are served. Fresh water comes from a well dug by the Japanese during WWII, and is drinkable. There is also bottled water available.

The shared bathrooms are modern, with lava rock pebbles for floors and coconut showerheads! Most of the area is shaded by tall trees. Maxi and Adi can show you to secluded beaches around the island, and they also have a boat that can take you around for snorkling.

The island’s main village can be reached by a 20 minute walk through palm groves, and has a few rudimentary stores. There obviously is no air-conditioning, nor any electric fans here. If you are heat sensitive like I am, be sure to take it easy. Which is probably why you came here in the first place.

I really wished I could’ve stayed the night. I will next time!
